The DOG TOWN YACHT CLUB was founded, following a bet about who could sail around Gwynn Island faster, as a PARODY of a stuffy yacht club in 1983. The name is a play on the derogatory term for Southside Richmond VA., where most of us lived at the time. We now have members in many states and places all over the world. The racing is kept low key. There are NO ENTRY FEES at our events. Most events have camping available. Most events are within 2 hrs of Richmond. ANY boat is eligible. We encourage experimental and home built boats, multihulls etc. Our rating system, in most cases, is very good. YOU do NOT have to be a member to come race with us, BUT you will not be eligible for points towards our high points championship or get a trophy without membership. THE MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE $10.00 per year. If your looking for a prestigious club with lots of blue blazers and black braid, big boats with lots of teak and a crew of deck apes on the rail...This ain't it. But if you want fun, competitive, low-cost racing with a party atmosphere, this is the one. ALL experience levels welcome.... transatlantic ocean racer to just learning, we have both.

 Club Traditions

1.   A spring training party before the season.

2.      An awards banquet / oyster roast at the end of the season.

3.      The winner of the high point competition buys the oysters.

4.      The winner of the DTYC cup adds something to it.

5.      Traditional race dates:

Starting May 15th and ending October 15th races on the Saturday closest to every full moon that is not a holiday weekend.

6.      Awards:

Racers are awarded a trophy for their best achievement during the year. The trophy ranking is high points, regatta, and race. In the event that a racer desires an award lower than his best, the award is sized as if awarding his best achievement. The sailor who earns the most high points as skipper without otherwise winning a trophy is given the ‘nipping at the heels of the fleet’ award (small trophy).

            Large trophy for high points

            Medium trophy for Regattas

Small trophy for races and ‘nipping’.
